Gerrard To Come Quicklier Than He Thought

Liverpool 4-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The win cuts Manchester United’s lead over Liverpool to four points, although the defending champions still have a game in hand.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute to put the hosts ahead, but Liverpool’s Fernando Torres answered right back five minutes later and Steven Gerrard scored again in the next minutes.

Fabio Aurelio scored in 77th minute when he shot inside the near post, leaving goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar no chance.

Andrea Dossena then capped the scoring shortly before in90th minute.

Youssi Benayoun header helped Liverpool defeat Real Madrid 1-0 in the first leg of their last 16 Champions League duel at the Real Madrid.

Youssi Benayoun headed in a Fabio Aurelio cross in the 82nd minute for a vital away goal and Liverpool now hold the advantage ahead of the return leg at Liverpool home on 10.03.2009.

Liverpool – Chelsea 2-0 (0-0)

Fernando Torres scored two goals in the final minutes to give Liverpool 2-0 win over Chelsea.

The first strike came in the 89th minute after a good cross from Fabio Aurelio, while the Spaniard added a second in stoppage time when he pounced on a loose ball inside the area to beat goalkeeper Petr Cech.

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard received a questionable red card in the 60th minute for a foul on Xabi Alonso.

The first half was very tight with few openings for either side, although Liverpool did manage to test Cech on a few occasions.

With the game headed for a scoreless draw, Liverpool mounted a late surge to take the points as Steven Gerrard played the ball wide to Aurelio on the left and he drove a cross into the box for Fernando Torres.

The striker then met the ball with his head at the near post and redirected it past Cech to make it 1-0 for Liverpool.

The second goal was scored in injury time.

Liverpool move to within two points of leader Manchester United.

Liverpool’s Spanish striker Fernando Torres believes Manchester United are the favourites to win the Premier League title this season.

Fernando Torres said:“Firstly Manchester United have two games in hand and if they win both they will be top of the league,” , “That is certainly possible for a team of their quality.

“We know the chances we have. We have to go to Old Trafford and we will play Arsenal and Chelsea at home and we shouldn’t drop more points like the other day .

“I think Manchester United have their chances as do Chelsea and Liverpool. We have to fight till the end and we’ll see what happens. Few teams can win the Premier League today and we can be champions this year.”

Fernando Torres said he believes the game between Manchester United and Liverpool at the Old Trafford will decide the title. “If everything goes as we expect, we think we will go there in a similar position to now to that game,” said Fernando Torres.

Cristiano Ronaldo voted FIFA player of the year

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo completed his clean sweep of soccer’s top individual awards for 2008 when he was named FIFA‘s world player of the year.

The 23-year-old Portuguese winger previously won France Football magazine’s Ballon d’Or  award as the world player of the year, and was named the world’s best player by the global players’ union FIFPro and World Soccer magazine.

“It is an overwhelming moment, a very special moment in my life,” said Cristiano Ronaldo. “I would like to say to my mother and sister that the fireworks can be fired off now.”

Cristiano Ronaldo accumulated 935 votes, Lionel Messi finished second with 678 and Fernando Torres was third with 203 votes.

Cristiano Ronaldo scoring 42 goals last season for Manchester United won both the Champions League and Premier League title.

Ronaldo is the second Portuguese player to win the FIFA‘s world player of the year, Luis Figo claimed the honour in 2000.

Cristiano Ronaldo said: “It is a dream for me to get this prize because I want to bring the team and my country forward,”, “I would like to dedicate it to my family. This is the most important thing to me.”

Cristiano Ronaldo is the first English Premier League player to win the award.

European Player of the Year  Cristiano Ronaldo said he wants to stay with Manchester United and help the English team win more trophies.

“I’ve been playing for Manchester for five years, I feel at home. There have been prizes won by this club both collectively and individually,” Cristiano Ronaldo said. “I’m happy at Manchester and want to stay.”

Cristiano Ronaldo joined Manchester United from Sporting Lisabona in 2003 and last season scored 42 goals to help the club win the Premier League and Champions League titles.

“I am an ambitious person. I don’t want it to stop here,” Cristiano Ronaldo said. “I think we have to keep trying to win trophies, collectively and individually. I am on the right track. I am the Golden Ball winner today, which motivates me even more.”

Cristiano Ronaldo, who beat strikers Lionel Messi of Barcelona and Fernando Torres of Liverpool to the trophie European Player of the Year , is also looking to make progress as a player.

“It’s always special to reach this level, the important thing is to stay there,” Cristiano said. “The idea is to keep progressing, collectively and individually as well.”

Cristiano Ronaldo was crowned European Footballer of the Year on Tuesday.

The 23 year old Portugal Cristiano Ronaldo in which he scored 42 goals in all competitions.

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres were second and third, respectively.

Cristiano Ronaldo is also the third Portuguese winner after Eusebio and Luis Figo.

“It is one of the most beautiful days of my life. To gain this trophy is something I dreamed of as a child,” said Cristiano Ronaldo. “Great emotion fills me but I cannot really describe it.

“I want to thank those who voted for me, those who know me and those who live with me.

“There were other great names this year. I see that Lionel Messi finished second and Fernando Torres third, but also [fifth-place] Xavi – all these people could have taken the trophy and I won it.”

“This trophy is one that I want to win again because it is so good. Therefore, I will awake and I will say to myself. I want to be even better.”
