Arsenal – Tottenham Hotspur 4-4 (1-1)
Fast and furious, some of the football was of the highest technical order. Arsenal scored through Mikael Silvestre, William Gallas, Emmanuel Adebayor and Robin van Persie but Spurs were never out of it. David Bentley, Darren Bent, Jermaine Jenas and Lennon all found the mark to bring a smile the length of the Seven Sisters Road to Redknapp’s face.
“The Redknapp revolution continues’’ screamed a radio reporter as Arsenal fans filed out as if attending a wake. Redknapp’s impact was undeniable, from the tactics that encouraged Luka Modric to pull the strings behind Roman Pavlyuchenko, to unleashing attackers from the bench like Bent and Lennon.
If Redknapp will celebrate the draw, Wenger will be inconsolable over a draw that tasted like defeat. The surrendering of two points when leading 4-2 on the cusp of added time will inevitably force a painful inquest at Arsenal’s training ground today. Wenger’s decision to withdraw Van Persie and Theo Walcott, who were inflicting so much pain on Spurs, backfired badly. Spurs were able to turn the red tide back.

Newcastle United 2 – 1 West Bromwich A.
Joey Barton justified the faith of Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear by scoring the opening goal as the Magpies beat West Brom 2-0 for only their second Premier League win this season.
Barton, making his first start since being released from prison, struck from the penalty spot in the 10th minute before birthday boy Obafemi Martins added a second three minutes before half-time at St James’ Park on Tuesday.
West Brom substitute striker Ishmael Miller pulled a goal back in the 65th minute to fray the nerves of Newcastle’s fans but the home side hung on for a first league win since August.
Victory took Newcastle United out of the relegation zone and into 15th place, a point behind the Baggies.
“I know it’s an old cliche but nobody wants to be in the bottom three,” Kinnear told Sky Sports. “Nobody likes being in that position but if we can carry on now and get a second win then that would be great.
“If we can get a second victory back to back then it would be a completely different picture.”
Reflecting on a fraught display after half-time, Kinnear added: “We started the second-half too cautiously.
“We kept defending deeper and deeper because we were trying to protect what we had but we sat back instead of going for it and we caused ourselves some problems.”
His response was to kiss the badge on his Newcastle shirt, a move that many saw as inflammatory and a contributory factor to the violence which broke out after the final whistle between rival fans at the Stadium of Light.
By that stage, Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given had preserved the home side’s lead with a fine save when one-on-one with James Morrison.
Cristiano Ronaldo voted world’s best by fellow pros
Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has been voted player of the year by his fellow members of the international soccer players’ union.
FIFPro, which has 57,500 members, announced on Monday that the Portuguese winger has topped their annual poll.
“To be recognized by my fellow professional players worldwide coming from over 50,000 players is amazing,” the Portugal winger said.
Ronaldo earned the award after scoring 42 goals last season when United won both the Champions League and Premier League title.
“I would like to thank my teammates and coaches and everyone involved at Man United and the national team, as well as my family and friends for their support,”Cristiano Ronaldo said. “Thank you also to FIFPro for this award and for your work in protecting the interests and welfare of players around the world.”
Wigan 0-4 Aston Villa
John Carew rose off the bench to inspire a power-packed second-half display that will send shivers down the rest of the Premier League.
A bruised foot at the start of the second half to the hugely influential Gareth Barry could really have hampered Villa’s ability to build on a 1-0 lead.
Within minutes of coming on he had powered an Ashley Young corner goalwards, which allowed Gabby Agbonlahor a simple tap-in.
Then Agbonlahor returned the favour to set Carew up for a simple headed third.
Substitute Steve Sidwell, on his league debut, sent a thunderous drive into the top corner to complete a rout as Martin O’Neill’s men kept up the pressure on the top four.
Aston Villa had kept just one clean sheet in 16 matches on the road in the league – that being the 6-0 rout of Derby at Pride Park in April.
This victory was by no means as simple but what Aston Villa enjoyed was a mountainous level of performance from their big players.
Wigan were out to stop the rot after two straight defeats and were soon causing problems with set-pieces.
They got it with a penalty that sent Wigan boss Steve Bruce into a rage.
Olivier Kapo fired an excellent chance over the crossbar from outside the box, then Daniel de Ridder’s corner was met by a powerful header from Scharner, which forced Friedel into the first of his remarkable saves.
Wigan should have been level on the half-hour. Wilson Palacios’ superb shot from 35 yards bounced awkwardly for Friedel who only managed to push the ball out to Kapo.
Ex-Baggie Koumas forced a second save from Friedel after driving in a low shot from 25 yards which the goalkeeper turned around the post.
In driving rain Aston Villa went to sleep at a de Ridder corner and Scharner powered a free header over the crossbar.
Amr Zaki went close for a shell-shocked Latics, and Heskey went closer still with a backward header from Koumas’ cross, but the wind had been taken from their sails.
Then came the icing on the cake. Sidwell, finally making his Premier League bow for the last five minutes, leathered a cracker into the top
Chelsea 0-1 Liverpool
Xabi Alonso’s first-half goal ended Chelsea’s 86-game unbeaten home league record and put Liverpool three points clear at the top of the Premier League.
Alonso struck in the ninth minute when his 20-yard shot deflected off Jose Bosingwa and left Petr Cech wrong-footed.
It was Chelsea’s first defeat under new boss Luiz Felipe Scolari but Liverpool were always in charge of a pulsating contest at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea began the brighter of the two sides and their initial thrusts almost resulted in an opening goal.
Chelsea failed to deal with a thrown-in when John Terry could only half-clear Dirk Kuyt’s clever back-header.
The ball fell to Alonso on the edge of the penalty area and his shot deflected off Chelsea right-back Bosingwa into the net.
Liverpool were commanding form and dominating the game.
In the 17th minute, Albert Riera beat Bosingwa on the left flank but fired his shot into the side netting.
Bosingwa tried to run at the Liverpool defence in the 21st minute but was chopped down crudely by Riera who received a booking from referee Howard Webb as a result.
Seconds later Salomon Kalou headed just over the bar from another cross by Bosingwa.
Liverpool continued to look dangerous and in the 24th minute they almost increased their lead when Cech was forced to tip a glorious volley from Steven Gerrard over the bar.
In the 36th minute Deco was given time and space to run at the Liverpool defence but his left-foot drive from 18 yards was wide of Jose Reina’s right-hand upright.
In the 38th minute Gerrard looked to be heading for an early bath for a foul on Bosingwa.
However, referee Webb elected to show the England midfielder a yellow card for his challenge.
Liverpool’s speed on the counter-attack almost opened up Chelsea again in the 43rd minute but, despite some confusion in the home defence, John Mikel Obi managed to clear their lines.
Chelsea began the second half in a much brighter fashion and it required an interception from Carragher to prevent a cross from Florent Malouda reaching its destination in the six-yard box.
In the 53rd minute Malouda was booked for checking a fine run by Alvaro Arbeloa.
Moments later Malouda was felled by Liverpool ‘keeper Reina in the penalty area but he had already been ruled offside by referee Webb.
In the 57th minute, Kuyt tried his luck from 20 yards but his effort was wide of the target.
It was the catalyst for a Chelsea to make a double substitution with Malouda and Kalou replaced by Juliano Belletti and Franco Di Santo.
It was another indication of Chelsea’s growing frustration and it prompted Liverpool to replace Robbie Keane with Ryan Babel.
The Reds were awarded a free-kick 25 yards out in the 60th minute when Belletti kicked Riera in the face.
Chelsea then had a massive escape when Alonso’s effort rebounded off the foot of the post for Ricardo Carvalho to clear.
At the opposite end, a 25-yard drive from Babel was only just wide of the target.

West Ham Utd 0-2 Arsenal
Emmanuel Adebayor came off the bench to inspire Arsenal to a 2-0 win over 10-man West Ham at Upton Park on Sunday.
There were chances at both ends throughout, with the Gunners hitting the woodwork twice through Theo Walcott and Robin Van Persie.
The game changed with the introduction of striker Adebayor, who saw his shot across the box deflected into the back of his own net by West Ham defender Julien Faubert.
Adebayor added a second late on after a long pass by Nicklas Bendtner sent the front-man through on goal.
“We came here to win the game,” said Adebayor. “We knew it would be very difficult, very tough, and it was. We have to complement the West Ham team today.
“We know that to win the title we need to win these games – against the likes of West Ham. We need to take it game after game and see what we can do.”
Gunners manager Arsene Wenger would have sent the same message ringing into the ears of his players prior to the game, as the points dropped by Manchester United and Chelsea over the weekend gave the Gunners a great opportunity to edge closer to the top of the table with a win at West Ham.
Early season defeats to Hull and Fulham have left Arsenal just a game away from reaching their total number of defeats from last seaso.
Theo Walcott and Robin van Persie both hit the woodwork, but it was the performance of West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green that looked like denying Arsenal all three points.
The game’s decisive moment when it came in the 75th minute as Adebayor’s dragged shot deflected off Julien Faubert and into his own net to give Arsenal a lead that they looked like they might never get after being denied by Green on so many occasions.
